Stomach is an organ between esophagus in our body and small intestine. Digestion of protein begins in this organ. Actually, stomach has three tasks to do, which are storage of food, mixing of food with acids in stomach and then sending this mixture to the small intestine. Almost all people experience the stomach problem during their life. Indigestion is one of the most commonly faced problems by many people. Heartburn is also among the common problems of stomach. Some other problems may include peptic ulcers or Gastroesophageal reflux disease and these problems usually require medical attention. It is usually prescribed that in case of blood during bowel movement, heartburn not relieved by antacids, ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, and/or severe abdominal pain; people have to visit doctors to get proper treatment.

One of the common stomach related problems include abdominal bloating, which is a condition in which abdomen becomes tight and swollen. This is a gastric pain and patient feels uncomfortable. Bloating is a very common problem and it mostly affects adults. Mostly heartburn, gastric pain, nausea, bloated stomach and vomiting are common symptoms of bloating. Bloating after eating is very common in adults. If there is any kind of soreness in the lining of stomach or in the small intestine (duodenum) then this is called peptic ulcer. This problem arises when acids in the stomach, which are actually helping in digestion of food, damage the walls of the organ, i.e. stomach. Most commonly, peptic ulcer happens due to a bacterium known as Helicobacter pylori. Another most common cause of this problem is the long term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin. Usually, it is thought that spicy foods and stress can cause ulcers but it has to be considered that they don’t cause ulcers, but they can worsen the condition.

Peptic ulcer symptoms include weight loss, nausea or vomiting, bloating, abdominal fullness, burning pain in the stomach, heartburn and burping. Hematemesis or vomiting of blood can occur as a result of bleeding coming directly from a gastric ulcer or as a result of damage to the esophagus from serious type of vomiting. Condition of melena may also happen. It is the condition of abnormally dark tarry feces containing blood due to gastrointestinal bleeding. Sometimes, an ulcer can result in duodenal or gastric perforation resulting in acute peritonitis, i.e. inflammation of the peritoneum, which is a transparent membrane lining the abdominal cavity. This condition is extremely painful and may require immediate surgery. Burning stomach pain is considered as the most common symptom of peptic ulcer. Pain begins between meals and/or during the night time and usually improves on eating, drinking or taking antacids. Pain can be relieved within minutes or it may take hours for the pain to be relieved. Most of the time pain comes and goes for many days or many weeks. During the condition of ulcers, it has to be considered that duodenal ulcers cane be relieved by food but the condition of gastric ulcers can be increased by it.
